For The Love Of Columbus
Radioontheshelf
Christopher Columbus tried several times to reach what he believed to be Asia. He was in fact reaching the islands of the Bahamas, Cuba and Haiti. This was the nearest he got to North America but until relatively recent times he was considered to be the first man to reach the Americas. He had married a Portuguese noble woman with whom he had a son but on returning from one of his journeys he found she had died. Some said it was from a broken heart caused by Columbus’ refusal to stop his exploring which kept him away for years at a time. His journeys, though unsuccessful as far as the discovery of new lands, formed the basis of trade routes that enabled those who came after to trade with the new worlds.
I have taken Silkwords beautiful poem and selected various phrases to add to the mix. Take a listen to the full track on her site.
We are aboard the Santa Maria
Its Christopher and I
We’re setting sail for unknown waters
To find where the land touches the sky
There is a place beyond our dreams
Land that belongs to mother nature
Its people they are free
They are the gifted sons and daughters
And though we speak in different tongues
We are still people from the valley
We came to trade and share our worlds
We are explorers one day allies
