I have been profoundly moved by what the people of Haiti are currently suffering. Suffering…it is embedded in Haitian history. As I read and heard reports on the aftermath of the earthquake and the history of Haiti, the spirit of the Haitians sparkled. One report described how women were clapping and dancing in the street after the earthquake as a form of potest and connection. Another report described how the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s historic adversary, has opened its borders and coffers to assist in relief efforts.

As a people the Haitians have been described as dignified, and clearly there is reslience as the Haitians have survived extreme poverty, natural disaster and political corruption.

Reslience & Dignity

Tension lingered deep, lingered for years
corruption and povety
a mother’s fear that her child would never have a chance to grow and struggle would be all he’d know
The inevitable release, the seismic event that makes speculation meaningless
The future instantly redefined
as the earthquake changed millions of lives

All seems lost
How do you go on?

As the night falls once again
The sun shall rise again
Resilience and dignity
Again stars shine above
And once again, you’ll want to love

Exposed to tremors, exposed to death
chaos and confusion
yet hope persists
The infrastructure shattered
still the women clap and sing
Unimaginable destruction you see
yet the rift has been fused between enemies
The heart of the world is reaching out to you
so let it in to soothe

All seems lost
