With the Light

5/18/10 Update: Alternative versions of this pell uploaded containing additional lyrics. Alternative versions recorded at 50bpm.
Today marks one year since my first upload to ccMixter. I can’t express how grateful I am to Fourstones for turning me onto this site. My experience here has been transformative — my life is forever richer for the relationships and creative opportunities that ccMixter brought into it! Thank you everyone for sharing your great work, for listening to and remixing my work (even when my work is not so great), for all of the support and encouragement you have given me, and for being part of such a splendid community!
Meanwhile, “With the Light” is the theme song for “Box Window Door” a play currently in development in Los Angeles and for which I serve as the musical director. At the beginning and at the end of the show, this song is sung a capella by the cast.
Music is an intergral part of the production. In addition to creating original music for the show, I have been curating music from ccMixter to use in the show. We did a workshop peformance in January, which included a long q&a session afterwards. The audience was mesmerized, transfixed and impressed by the music, and it became a wonderful opportunity to talk about ccMixter as a rich creative resource.
Remixes of this song will definitely be considered for use in conjunction with the production — although I am not sure right now how that may be. In the event remixes of this song are considered for use, we will talk further about such usage, licensing, etc.
[Dry stems for each vocal part uploaded separately — the lead alone, and the harmonies in a .zip file.]
With the Light
I didn’t see it coming
locked down deep inside
dark in a box of sorrow
far far from the light.
Then a dream, a hope, a glimmer
through the window pane
maybe that’s the answer
let the light back in again.
And when that door does open
I’ll step right outside
I’ll be with my maker
I’ll be with the light
I’ll be with my maker
I’ll be with the light.
Along that road I traveled all day and through the night
Without a map to guide me
searching for the light
Then a dream a hope a glimmer
through the fire and through the rain
Maybe that’s the answer let the light back in again
And when that journey’s over I’ll step right outside
I’ll be with my maker I’ll be with the light
I had a heart that’s broken, bitter and petrified
Locked in a box of sorrow far far from the light
Then a dream a hope a glimmer relieved from that pain
Maybe that’s the answer let the light back in again
And when that love does find me my heart shall be bright
I’ll be with my maker I’ll be with the light
