Mixed Up in the Drive By
Colin Mutchler
Finally finished up a song some of which was first sung in a freestyle session the night in September of 2001 in Brooklyn. Lyrics are below. Wasn’t sure if it was relevant in the post Bush Obama era, but hearing and reading watching about Gaza has reminded me that we’ve always been at war.
mixed up in the drive by
Colin Mutchler
gonna go, where I find a way
can I ask for the reasons why I
just got shot by, mixed up in the drive by
fast. food. fuel supply
can I ask for the reason why
fast. food. fuel supply
can I ask for the reason why
we’re singing ‘bout god and america
we’re fighting ‘bout god and america
I know I don’t want to go to war
I know I don’t want to be at war
but I understand we are at war
I understand we have always been at war
hip hop sourced by
love songs of native cries
kings call, lost pride
some say it’s our time to die
kings call, lost pride
some say it’s too soon to die
can I ask for the reasons why, just got shot by
two bombs, disguised as planes,
a city’s love expressed as pain
years passed, many slain
years passed, so many slain
I know I don’t want to go to war
I know I don’t want to be at war
but I understand we are at war
I understand we have always been at war
rock hop rolling by
like a stone thrown through dylan’s lie
said dooms day, crawling by,
while some say, it’s our time to die
it’s too soon to die
can I ask for the reasons why, don’t know
can I wonder? where to fall
can I wonder? where to see
can I wonder? which way we go
can I wonder? which place we see
hey popular culture, still watching tv
hey popular culture, are you listening to me
gonna go, where I find a way
can I ask for the reasons why I
just got shot by, mixed up in the drive by
fast. food. fuel supply
can I ask for the reason why
